Sarah De Rees
I love exploring places on foot and by kayak, am passionate about Scottish and Orkney's culture and heritage, and our natural environment. With a background in Scottish history and culture, I became an Orkney Tourist guide in 2023 with a dream to combine my love for the outdoors and passion for history.
I grew up in Belgium and moved to Scotland in 2001. As a keen climber and hill walker for over 20 years, I added kayaking to the mix when I moved to Orkney 17 years ago, as what Orkney lacks in mountains, it gains in dramatic coastline. I love showing visitors the beauty, wildlife, history and culture our islands have to offer.
I am an STGA Green Badge Tourist Guide, Lowland Leader, Sea Kayak Leader, Level 3 Sheltered Water Kayak Coach, Greenland Rolling and kayaking enthusiast and Climbing Wall Instructor.

My kayaking journey started here in Orkney over 12 years ago. In 2019 I turned my love for kayaking into a profession as a dedicated kayaking guide. From the gentle exploration of serene caves and stunning cliffs teeming with wildlife to the thrill of advanced conditions, downwind trips, and the excitement of kayak surfing, kayaking is more than a hobby for me.
My journey in coaching began eight years ago, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to help beginners progress and develop their skills, building their confidence to navigate more challenging waters. Witnessing their growth and enthusiasm reminds me why I love what I do. Orkney has some of the best sea kayaking in the world and guiding here is a joy.
I am a Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Leader and BCAC Sea Kayak Coach (Advanced Water)

I first started kayaking 9 years ago and have been paddling ever since. I’m passionate about sharing my love for our wonderful island and all it has to offer. From the breathtaking scenery to the incredible wildlife around Orkney, there’s something for all ages.
From a young age, I was always keen to help and support people of all ages by encouraging more people to try kayaking, no matter their abilities. I hope to build people’s confidence in themselves whilst putting them at ease with my friendly personality and experience. I also became a Sheltered Water Sea Kayak Coach in 2024 at the age of 16. Becoming one of only five under 18 year olds to have completed a sea kayaking coach qualification in Scotland.
For me, it has never felt like work when out paddling on the water as I have so much passion for kayaking. I love to show people the wonders of our amazing coastline from on the water that you just don’t get to see from the land.
